Start from the workload, not the trend

Cloud-native is a means, not a goal. Begin with the workload that actually hurts — the one that is slow to release, expensive to run or fragile under load — and design the smallest change that relieves it. A clear problem keeps architecture decisions honest and lets you measure whether the move paid off.

Make every step reversible

Migrate behind interfaces so you can route a slice of traffic, compare behaviour and roll back without drama. Infrastructure as code and repeatable environments turn a migration into a sequence of small, reviewable pull requests rather than a single high-stakes cutover.

Budget for the boring parts

Observability, cost monitoring and runbooks are what make a cloud system survivable in production. Plan them into the work from the start. A platform you cannot see into or afford is not actually cloud-native, whatever the architecture diagram says.
